flatten

flatten vt.  To remove structural information, esp. to
   filter something with an implicit tree structure into a simple
   sequence of leaves; also tends to imply mapping to
   {flat-ASCII}.  "This code flattens an expression with
   parentheses into an equivalent {canonical} form."
