Topic of the workshop

If we look on systems which act in a real environment, any reasoning process has to be grounded in this environment. Consequently, an interpretation of an instruction given to the system by a user must be generated in the context of the perceived environment. What are adequate representations and reasoning methods in order to realize such an integrated understanding process? Recent systems which realize multi-modal human-computer interactions try to simplify at least one of the input channels in order to reduce the error rates drastically and to get a reliable common interpretation. If we drop such simplifications, the representation of and reasoning with uncertainties becomes a key problem in this topic.

The workshop aims to stimulate collaborative research between the fields of research which impinge on this problem, such as Computer Vision, Natural Language and Speech Processing, Spatio-Temporal Reasoning, Cognitive Science, Computational Imagery, Linguistics, etc. and in this sense specializes the work done at the ICCV-98 Workshop on ``Conceptual Description of Images''.

Research topics that adresses the focus of the workshop include:

  • speech recognition and understanding
  • object recognition and image understanding
  • event detection
  • generating conceptual descriptions
  • spatial and temporal reasoning
  • reasoning with uncertainties
  • adaptive systems
  • integrated control stategies
