Luc Steels is Professor of Computer Science at the Free University of Brussels (VUB) and Director of the VUB Artificial Intelligence Laboratory which he founded in 1983. After a doctorate in computational linguistics from the University of Antwerp (UIA), he studied Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at MIT and took research positions at MIT AI Lab and Schlumberger. His main research interests are now: the origins of intelligence, focusing in particular on the origins of sensori-motor intelligence through experiments with physical robots, and the origins of language and meaning, explored mainly through software simulations. In 1996 Luc Steels founded a new laboratory for computer science for Sony in Paris which he is currently directing.

PD Dr. Marcus Spies studierte Psychologie an der Universität Bonn und der Technischen Universität Berlin und promovierte 1988 an der FU Berlin. Ab 1987 übte er Industrietätigkeiten als Gastwissenschaftler und später Projektleiter am Wissenschaftlichen Zentrum der IBM in Heidelberg aus, unter zeitweiliger Entsendung an das Forschungsinstitut für anwendungsorientierte Wissensverarbeitung (FAW) an der Universität Ulm. Seit 1997 ist er bei IBM Global Services in den Bereichen Logistik, Software-Qualitätsmanagement und Netzwerksicherheit tätig. Daneben nahm er Lehrtätigkeiten an der Freien Universität Berlin wahr, wo er sich 1993 über stochastische Gedächtnismodelle habilitierte. Seit 1997 ist er Privatdozent an der Universität Heidelberg und Vorsitzender der Gesellschaft für Kognitionswissenschaft.

Ray S. Jackendoff, Ph.D. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is Professor of Linguistics at the Psychology Department of Brandeis University. Professor Jackendoff's research deals with the semantics of natural language, its bearing on the formal structure of cognition, and its lexical and syntactic expression. He has also done extensive research on the relationship between conscious awareness and the computational theory of mind, on syntactic theory, and, with Fred Lerdahl, on musical cognition. His books on consciousness and the mind, its patterns, languages, and semantic structures have found wide and international recognition. In the academic year 1999/2000 Professor Jackendoff will be a Wissenschaftskolleg Fellow in Berlin.

Christof Koch is Professor of Computation and Neural Systems at Caltech. He studied Physics and Philosophy in Tübingen and was awarded a Master degree in Physics (1980) and a Ph.D. (1982). After four years as a post-doctoral fellow at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and at the Department of Psychology at MIT, he joined Caltech's newly started Computation and Neural Systems option, where he has been ever since. His main research interests include the biophysical mechanisms underlying neuronal computations, how the biophysics and the microanatomy of neurons subserves information processing, and the neuronal basis of visual attention and consciousness.

Prof. Dr. Ipke Wachsmuth studierte Mathematik und Informatik an der Technischen Universität Hannover, wo er 1980 mit einer Dissertation über Zellularautomaten promovierte. Nach Lehr- und Forschungstätigkeiten an der Universität Osnabrück, der Northern Illinois University und bei IBM Deutschland habilitierte er sich 1989 an der Universität Osnabrück über intelligente Wissensorganisation; im gleichen Jahr wurde er auf die Professur für Wissensbasierte Systeme (Künstliche Intelligenz) an die Universität Bielefeld berufen. Er befaßt sich gegenwärtig mit Forschungsthemen zur intelligenten Mensch-Maschine-Kommunikation, Multimedia und Virtual Reality und ist stellvertretender Sprecher des SFB 360 "Situierte Künstliche Kommunikatoren".
