Ipke Wachsmuth is emeritus professor of artificial intelligence at Bielefeld University, where he has taught for more than 25 years. He is a former president of the German Society for Cognitive Science and for many years he has also been director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) at Bielefeld. He studied mathematics and computer science at the University of Hanover, where he also obtained his doctorate. During his career he held positions at the University of Osnabrück, Northern Illinois University, USA, and IBM Germany. At Bielefeld University's Center for Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) he is now concerned with philosophical and ethical issues of artificial intelligence and robotics.
